9 of the World's Most Endangered Creatures

Found only on the island of Java, Indonesia, Javan rhinos are critically endangered with around 75 individuals left. 

JAVAN RHINOS

With just about 100 individuals left, Amur leopards are critically endangered, mainly due to habitat loss, prey scarcity, and infrastructure development.

AMUR LEOPARD

Weighing up to 140kg, the Sunda Island tiger is critically endangered with around 600 individuals remaining. 

SUNDA ISLAND TIGER

Living in high-altitude forests in Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda, mountain gorillas face threats from habitat loss due to human settlement encroachment.

MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

The most endangered great ape, with fewer than 800 individuals, Tapanuli orangutans are threatened by habitat loss from agriculture, mining, and development.

TAPANULI ORANGUTAN

The only freshwater porpoise in the world, Yangtze finless porpoises are critically endangered due to environmental degradation, overfishing, and water pollution. China has upgraded their protection status to the highest level.

YANGTZE FINLESS PORPOISE

Recovering from severe poaching, black rhinos are still critically endangered with around 5,630 individuals left. Poaching for their horns remains a significant threat, leading to almost 10,000 rhinos killed in the last decade.

BLACK RHINOS

African forest elephants have declined by 86% over 31 years due to poaching and habitat loss. They are critically endangered, occupying only about 25% of their historic range in West and Central Africa.

AFRICAN FOREST ELEPHANT

Found only on Sumatra, Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered with less than 14,000 individuals left. Habitat loss from logging, agriculture, and development, along with the illegal pet trade, threaten their survival.
